Five Prospects in action This Week

Read Time:4 Minute, 45 Second

It’s a great weekend for fight fans as there are plenty of options to watch. From stacked regional cards like LFA 118 and Fury FC 53, to Bellator 271, read about five prospects you should be watching this weekend.

Welterweight: Mahmoud Fawzy Sebie

Mahmoud Sebie (2-0) is making his Bellator debut, but it’s a one-fight deal. With an impressive performance, he could be offered a multi-fight deal if that’s what he wants. Sebie came over from wrestling where he had an excellent career. He was a two-time Olympian, a four-time Arab wrestling champion, a five-time Africa wrestling champion, and a former Egyptian National Team member. Sebie started MMA late at the age of 28 as he’s only been fighting since January. Although he’s only had two MMA fights, he did last compete on Jorge Masvidal’s Gamebrad Fighting Championship.

In all three of his fights, including that custom bout, Sebie has looked unstoppable. The longest fight he’s had is 1:52 long. Sebie wastes no time rushing his opponents, getting the easy takedown, and smashing with ground and pound until the ref steps in. Nothing short of dominant he’s been since retiring from wrestling and entering MMA. Sebie is fighting Ethan Hughes who is also 2-0. Hughes also went 5-0 as an amateur so this is a good test for the Egyptian.

Strawweight: Jaqueline Amorim

Jacqueline Amorim (4-0) is a highly touted jiu-jitsu ace that has made the transition to MMA not even a year ago. Some of her accomplishments in BJJ are IBJJF World Champion, IBJJF World No-Gi Champion, CBJJ Brasileiro Champion, and more listed here. Her last two fights have been blowout performances inside the LFA cage. Four fights, four finishes, and four first-round finishes.

So far Amorim has easily closed the distance, got the takedown, moved to a dominant position, and finished with a sub. Her first three finishes are by submission and all three by different subs. Not just a jiu-jitsu player, Amorim scored a 10-second knockout with the right hand in her last fight. Amorim will headline LFA 118 this Friday against the very powerful Loveth Young for the vacant strawweight title.

Lightweight: Cristian Perez

Cristian Perez (6-0) has been quietly flowing under the radar for the Combat Global promotion. This year alone he’s had three fights and three impressive first-round finishes. The young 26-year-old Mexican always brings it and brings a well-rounded skillset. All six pro fights have been for Combate and he worked his way up from the prelims to the main card to the main event.

Perez is well-rounded, but his five finishes come by the way of submission. Although his wrestling/takedowns have looked good, Perez has sat guys down from head kicks and his hands. With his relentless pressure and his aggressiveness once the fight hits the mat, he’s a true finisher. Perez gets after it as his frantic pace is an issue for anyone he steps across the cage from. He’s fighting on the Combate card this Friday against Daniel Soto. It’s easily a set-up fight for Perez as Soto has lost his last four.

Bantamweight: Mo Miller

Mo Miller (6-0) is gonna be fighting for the first time since his stint on the contender series this past season. A fight that had the majority of the fans scratching their head from Dana White’s decision. Miller dominated Brandon Lewis to a decision, but Dana wasn’t unimpressed with his lack of killer instinct. Even though he had a one-sided performance, never getting close to finishing the fight held him back from a UFC contract. Prior to that, Miller has been fighting for LFA making a name for himself from dominant fights and finishes. In fact, he had a highlight-reel slam knockout before his fight on the contender series.

Miller has a background as a wrestler being a three-time All-American at Notre Dame. Of course, Miller has good wrestling, but he does have some bright spots on the feet. He throws a good one-two and his right hand is dangerous. Miller has the style to go far with his patient, but technical approach on the feet and some solid wrestling to dominate a fight with. He’s fighting on the Fury FC 53 card this weekend.

Middleweight: Joseph Holmes

Like Mo Miller, Joseph Holmes (6-1) is another snub from the past season of the contender series. Holmes, unlike Miller, was able to finish his fight but still didn’t get a contract. Dana was on the fence about signing him and instead invited him to a fight on the Fury FC card where he will be in attendance. Since losing his pro debut, Holmes has won his next six fights. That includes going 1-1 in Bellator and 2-0 in LFA.

Holmes is a rangy key with a good jab and a nice one-two. He also has a pretty good ground game shown in his contender series fight. He took the guy down easy, took the back, and finished with the rear-naked choke. Holmes actually has four wins by RNC and three of those in his last three fights. Also, a guillotine thrown in there as well so attacking the neck he does so well at. Holmes is gonna be fighting another contender series veteran Jhonoven Pati who has dropped his last two.
