2021: A fresh start for Franchon Crews-Dezurn

As the calendar flipped from 2020 to 2021, it marked a new beginning for Franchon Crews-Dezurn.

The WBC and WBO Super-Middleweight Champion returns to the ring this Saturday, January 2. Facing Ashleigh Curry on the undercard of Ryan Garcia vs. Luke Campbell, Crews-Dezurn will get a chance to let loose after a year away from the ring. Following a controversial fight against Alejandra Jimenez, the new year could bring better and brighter opportunities.

Initially losing to Jimenez, a former heavyweight, via split decision, the fight was deemed a no-contest when Jimenez tested positive for stanazolol on her “A” and “B” samples. The WBO immediately gave Crews-Dezurn her title back, but the WBC wasn’t so quick to pull the trigger. They were waiting to see the full results, which angered the champion.

The WBC eventually complied and returned the title to her, ending a run of unfortunate news.

“My belts should have been restored immediately,” Crews-Dezurn told The Ring. “When the pandemic hit, it was just a lot. No one knew if we were going to fight again. “For me, it was like back-to-back-to-back. I’m very happy that I have processed everything. I’m ready for my return in January.”

While this fight against Curry is a non-title bout, Crews-Dezurn will look to get the experience in. After 10+ years as an amateur, Crews-Dezurn was able to find opportunities as a pro. At 6-1 with one no-contest, she has come a long way after losing to undisputed middleweight champion Claressa Shields in her first fight. She has her eyes on a Shields rematch, especially since Shields is collecting gold all over the middleweight division. With Shields joining the Professional Fighters League in 2021, however, and a bout with Marie-Eve Dicaire on the table, she may just have to wait.

Putting a Shields bout in her back pocket, for now, Crews-Dezurn will now focus on her division, specifically WBA and IBF Super-Middleweight Champion Elin Cederros. The Swedish fighter beat Alicia Napoleon last February to combine both belts.

“I want to become the undisputed super middleweight champion of the world and I will become the undisputed super middleweight champion of the world,” Crews-Dezurn went on to say.

This will not be a walk in the park for Crews-Dezurn. Curry is 8-13-4, making her debut in 2009. Her last fight was a TKO loss at the hands of Savannah Marshall in October 2019. The 35-year-old has fought the likes of Marshall, Raquel Miller, Melissa St Vil, and Dicaire. Although Curry is 1-4 in her last four fights, Crews-Dezurn has made it a point for everyone not to take her lightly.

Crews-Dezurn recently aligned herself with Peter Kahn, manager of fighters like Xander Zayas, George Kambosos Jr, and Dennis Hogan. With Kahn by her side, Crews-Dezurn is ready to shatter the glass ceiling. A multi-talented personality, the 33-year-old wants to become a true star in and out of the ring, someone little girls can look up to. In a sport where women are fighting for equality when it comes to time and money, she is looking to stand out.

“Look at Serena (Williams),” Crews-Dezurn told Boxing Scene. “All she did was tennis, but now she’s a businesswoman and she’s doing other ventures outside of tennis, and you have to understand, boxing isn’t forever, especially being a woman.”

“If you’re a guy and do well in boxing, you could still ride off into the sunset. But for women, we have to find a way to eat, we have to find more ways to skin a cat, so it’s very important. I hope some girls, and some guys, will look at me one day and say, ‘Wow, she managed herself to a world title, she built a brand outside of that, she was commentating, she was making music, designing her own boxing uniform,’ take something from that and try to expand and do something great with it. That’s my mark on this world.”

With the headaches that came from 2020 behind her, Crews-Dezurn is moving on. What comes next could end up change her life and career. Her growth is not unnoticed, and the evolution of Franchon Crews-Dezurn will look to expand as a result of it.
