The Scrap’s 2020 Holy Sh*t Moment of the Year: Joaquin Buckley’s spinning back kick at UFC Fight Island 5
It is fitting that 2020 was filled with holy sh*t moments, considering the year itself was one of them. Mike Tyson returned to the ring, Floyd Mayweather announced a fight with Logan Paul, and that’s just scratching the surface.
As we look back on all the crazy moments from 2020 there is one that stands above the rest. Knockouts have naturally always been a part of MMA, some have been flashy while others have been brutal. The knockout we saw on October 10th, 2020 was both.
Fans often skip undercard fights however, this is the reason why you should always watch everything. Joaquin Buckley’s spinning back kick is the Holy Shit Moment of the Year.
Honorable Mentions: Mike Tyson announces return to boxing (exhibition bout with Roy Jones Jr.), Mayweather announces return against Logan Paul and James Gonzalez snaps Pat Sabatini’s arm at CFFC 81.
In the second round of the fight, Joaquin Buckley caught an attempted kick from his opponent Impa Kasanganay. This is a relatively common occurrence that is usually followed up by a strike of some kind. A punch or trip wasn’t going to suffice for Buckley and what he did next took the combat world by storm.

While his foot was still in the air, he turned and with his other foot knocked Impa out cold. We see a lot of crazy knockouts in MMA however, this was levels above anything we had ever seen. It’s the type of stuff you see in movies and in movies only. To add context the UFC Canada Twitter account posted a video of the knockout on the night and it is currently at 64.4 thousand views.
There is no doubt that this viral knockout was the biggest Holy Sh*t Moment of the Year because that was our reaction! The response on fight night and the fact it still gets talked about months later makes this the clear winner for the 2020 Holy Sh*t Moment of the Year.
