The Scrap’s 2019 Journalist of the Year: Joel Torres
2019 has come and gone! Therefore it’s time to celebrate the year that was with The Scrap’s End of the Year Awards.
During our first day of awards, we will be highlighting our amazing staff for all of their hard work and dedication to making The Scrap’s first year one that will be hard to top.
With that being said, I’m excited to announce the winner of our first award. Joel Torres is The Scrap’s quarterback and leading man. Now, he can add another title to his resume as he is our 2019 Journalist of the Year.
Working two full-time jobs on top of starting The Scrap at the very end of 2018, Joel has really taken the site to new heights and is one of the reasons we have been so successful in our freshmen year as a media outlet in combat sports.
New day, new fresh look! Happy birthday to The Scrap. It's been enjoyable working over there since September. @joeyfights has done some good work and makes things very professional for such a young site. Looking forward to seeing what 2020 brings 🎉 pic.twitter.com/Z521LGQodb

When there was no content being published, Joel was there pumping articles out like a machine. When views weren’t quite there, Joel was out interviewing fighters from UFC, Bellator, PFL, and top regional prospects. And when it seemed like no one wanted to write for us, Joel was out recruiting content producers that could help take us to the next level.
It’s crazy to think that he did all of this on top of finishing his Masters at the University of Southern California in May. The Scrap capped off at over 85k views for the year, and Joel was responsible for 37% of those.
My 2019 MMA twitter/media props go to:
@joeyfights
@amandansanchez @TeepChannel @UncleJoeyMMAThese four have created, or been a part of something that has helped shape the ‘lesser known' stage of MMA & highlight the year very well.

We started this all, just the two of us. But today we stand 17 writers strong and we are truly all over the world—United States, Spain, UK, and Canada.
There is no one more deserving of this award than Joel Torres. He’s a true hustler of the fight game and one that will impact it forever. I guarantee it.
